The Idea

Launched in India, Aakash(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aakash_(tablet)) is a tablet computer that is sold for around US$35. It was first released in late 2011, and just last week DataWind(the parent company) released the Aakash2, an improved version for the masses.

Like the One Laptop per Child(http://one.laptop.org/) initiative, the Aakash tablet is aimed at children from lower income families. With  help from the Indian government to subsidize and promote the project, it will be possible for people from rural areas and lower income families to get access to the internet and content that will help them be more connected and to be able to explore  the world.

Why is this an Advantage?

Never forget: the secret to creating riches for oneself is to create them for others.

Sir John Templeton

The great thing about the internet is that there is so much content available that you can educate yourself in any subject in a short time. So this gives those of lower incomes a chance to be open to the world. They get to learn more, and more of the world is available to them.

The advantage of the proposed low cost tablet is that it is not addressing the same market every other tablet company is targeting. Instead a whole new market is being opened, one no one was serving effectively before. Technology is at such a stage that the low cost products are today possible. The  BoP market is a very sizable market to cater to. Not everyone who owns an Aakash tablet may be able to afford the paid applications that are on the Android platform.  So opportunities exist for not just the hardware but also for software like applications. So there will be a need new class of apps, which run on different business models that will need to be created for this market.

So What can you create for this market?

For Market Research Companies, Start-Ups

With more people connected, it will be easier to gather data. Tools will be needed to facilitate this collection and study of data.

Since there are more people who are now connected, there will be a new market demographic to cater and target. Big companies and startups will need information and feedback of these people. So there will be a need for applications that will help them to gather this information well.

For Schools, universities and education content providers

The aim of this project is to help students be connected to better content available on the internet. As such there is a need for tools that will:

Allow for the better sharing of content

Tools to help encourage interaction and conversation, between the masses.

Applications Providers

New entertainment needs

Productivity tool of the rural micro-industries
